FIELDS Tools for ArcView© (version 3.5)
NOTE:  The FIELDS Tools for ArcView© require that ArcView 3.x and Spatial Analyst 1.x or 2.x are already loaded on your computer.

How to install

The installation file for the FIELDS Tools for ArcView© is a compressed file named FIELDS3_5a.zip.  (Note:  The installation includes not only the ArcView-based tools but also the stand-alone application, F/S Plus.)  To extract this file, you need to obtain a zip utility.  WinZip Computing, Inc. has developed a zip utility for Windows called WinZip.  For more information about WinZip, please visit the following WinZip Computing, Inc. Web site: http://www.winzip.com

To correctly download and extract the FIELDS3_5a.zip file, please follow these steps:

1. If you are downloading to your hard disk, create a new folder in which you can temporarily place and extract the FIELDS3_5a.zip file.

2. Follow the downloading procedure that is used by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to retrieve the FIELDS3_5a.zip file.  Download it to the newly created folder.

3. Locate the FIELDS3_5a.zip file in the folder where it was downloaded, and then double-click it to open it in WinZip.  Extract the files from WinZip to a folder on your hard disk.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Please uninstall any previous version of FIELDS Tools for ArcView© before continuing to Step #4.  To do this, go to your Start button and choose Settings.  Then choose Control Panel, and then choose the Add/Remove Programs button.  Navigate to the FIELDS entry, select it, and then click on the Add/Remove button.  Follow the directions to remove FIELDS Tools for ArcView© from your computer. WARNING:  During the uninstall process, if asked to remove a file (e.g., *.dll) that appears to no longer be used by any other other software, DO NOT remove it.  Sometimes these files are required by other software, including ArcView.  (The uninstall created by FIELDS Tools for ArcView© version 2.0 or later does not have this problem.)

Also uninstall any previous version of the FIELDS 3D Viewer before continuing.  Follow the above directions for using the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel.

4. Locate and double-click the FIELDS.exe file in the folder and follow the installation procedure.

5. Once installation is complete, the user will note that there will be a FIELDS folder in C:\Program Files (if the user choose that directory to install the FIELDS tools).  In this folder one can find the ReadMe.html file that provides the following useful information:

Important Notes;
Files included;
Known Problems;
Questions and Answers; and
Contact Information.
6.  Once installed, the FIELDS Tools for ArcView© will need to be loaded in order to work within ArcView.  To do this, open an ArcView project, open or create a View, then go to File and select "Extensions".  Scroll down the list of extensions and select the first extension named "FIELDS". (It should be named "FIELDS (Loads All FIELDS Extensions)".)  Click the "OK" button.  The following six new menu items will appear in ArcView:
Sample Design;
Database;
Modeling;
Analysis Tools;
F/S Plus; and
FIELDS Help.

Potential Problems

The InstallShield® of the FIELDS Tools for ArcView© assumes that a user can write to his/her ArcView© directories (whether these directories are on one's local hard drive or on a network) and to his/her Windows directories.  If this is not the case, you may need to contact your system administrator for help.  If you are still unable to install the FIELDS Tools for ArcView©, please send an e-mail message to John Bing-Canar.

Note to system administrators:  If multiple users are able to write to the same server and location, then it is also possible for a single user to run uninstall and thereby remove the FIELDS Tools for ArcView© for all users.

Please report problems with the FIELDS Tools for ArcView© to:  John Bing-Canar, U.S. EPA Superfund.
