Introduction to the Mathematics of Biological Complexity: July 12, 2002 In conjunction with Conference on Mathematics and Biology and Annual Meeting of the Society for Mathematical Biology, a one-day introduction was held. Specifically oriented towards biologists who would benefit from a broad overview of modern quantitative techniques that appear again and again in many biological contexts, this Short Course was designed as a very quick introduction to the material previously presented in the longer courses. An objective was to attract life science researchers and students who would like to establish collaborations with more quantitatively-trained colleagues, or are pursuing these collaborations now. All Short Course attendees stayed for the Conference as it provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to confer with many leading mathematical biologists and possibly foster new collaborations. There were 16 attendees supported by remaining funds from the initial NIH-award, in addition to three individuals from the Conference who attended at their own expense. This included 10 individuals who were pursuing graduate work in a variety of biology and MD programs, with the remainder being biology faculty or post-doctoral fellows. Details of the program and electronic versions of the materials presented are available at http://www.tiem.utk.edu/courses/smb2002.html
